The Best AirDrop Alternatives for Android, iPhone, and PC
I built Scythe's Drops feature out of my own frustration: I just wanted to get photos and videos from my iPhone onto my Mac instantly. Same Apple account, same Wi-Fi, everything "should" just work. Instead I'd get stuck troubleshooting visibility settings and Bluetooth half the time, for a feature that's supposed to be Apple's showcase of "it just works."
Why AirDrop falls apart, even for Apple users
AirDrop doesn't exist on Android, and it doesn't exist on Windows, so if anyone involved isn't on Apple hardware, it's not an option at all. But even the case it's supposed to nail, iPhone to Mac, can be a mess: stuck on "waiting," not showing up on the other device at all, or just failing with no explanation. If Apple can't make it work reliably between its own devices, there's no reason to expect it to be the answer for anything else.
So whether it's a phone on a different OS, a laptop that isn't a Mac, or just AirDrop being AirDrop, you need a way to send a file that doesn't depend on everyone having the right hardware.
A few real alternatives worth knowing about
- Google's Quick Share (formerly Nearby Share) - the closest thing Android has to AirDrop. Works well phone-to-phone on Android and is expanding to Windows, but it's still a local, nearby-only transfer, and cross-platform support to iPhone is limited.
- Snapdrop - used to be the go-to for this: a browser-based, local Wi-Fi transfer with no account and no app install. Worth knowing that it was acquired by LimeWire in February 2025, and snapdrop.net now redirects into LimeWire's own cloud service instead of the local, peer-to-peer tool it used to be. If you specifically want what Snapdrop used to offer, the community fork PairDrop picked up where it left off.
- Emailing or messaging yourself the file - works everywhere, which is exactly why so many people still do it, but it's clunky, clutters your inbox, and compresses photos/videos in ways you didn't ask for.
- Cloud storage (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.) - reliable and cross-platform, but it means opening a separate app, waiting for a full sync, and digging through folders instead of a quick, obvious drop-and-go.
Each one covers part of the problem, but I hadn't found anything that was cross-platform, fast, and left the file somewhere I could still find it a week later.
Scythe's Drops: file sharing that lives in the app you already use
